On August 21, between 6:27 UTC and 19:38 UTC, Cloudflare experienced a serious connectivity issue at its data centers in Ashburn, Northern Virginia, caused by a spike in traffic from servers deployed on Amazon AWS. As a result, all outgoing traffic from AWS in its us-east-1 region destined for domains hosted on Cloudflare was affected.
While most of our customers were not impacted, we did detect a small group that used Cloudflare for external communications to the Internet, which could have been potentially affected, causing slowness and saturation in transactions requiring communication to the affected domains.
We apologize for the inconvenience. Both Cloudflare and AWS have taken measures to prevent situations like this from happening again in the future.
